Né en 1956
Rick Prol est un artiste new-yorkais qui a obtenu un B.F.A. à la Cooper Union en 1980 et s’est fait connaître dans la scène artistique du East Village au début des années 1980. Dès 1982, il a commencé à exposer ses œuvres exubérantes dans les galeries de New York, dont une exposition individuelle marquante à la Hal Bromm Gallery en 1984. Ses personnages caricaturaux, souvent placés dans des scènes urbaines dystopiques, sont à la fois humoristiques et horribles. Peintes avec audace dans des couleurs vives, ses œuvres dénoncent les folies et les souffrances humaines avec une touche absurde et un style unique.
Le critique d’art Edward Leffingwell l’a qualifié de « maître de l’angoisse gothique », et Prol a su intégrer des influences aussi variées que Macbeth de Shakespeare, la musique flamenco, Martha Graham et Goya dans son travail. Son style émerge du terreau punk de New York des années 80, qu’il a mélangé avec des thèmes métaphysiques et des éléments issus de son subconscient. Ses œuvres, oniriques et dystopiques, mettent en scène des figures symboliques telles que des voitures empilées, des collines arborées, des bateaux pirates, ou encore son célèbre « chat-o-pus », une créature hybride qui revient souvent dans ses compositions. Il incorpore également des objets du quotidien, tels que des portes, des fenêtres brisées ou des matériaux trouvés, qu’il intègre dans ses tableaux aux compositions uniques. Ses œuvres se distinguent par un traitement non conventionnel de l’espace et de l’échelle, créant un effet poétique et décalé, rappelant des récits sans intrigue claire.
Tout au long de ses 35 ans de carrière, Rick Prol a exposé dans de nombreuses institutions prestigieuses, telles que le Smithsonian Libraries Collection, le Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden à Washington DC, le Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) et le Guggenheim Museum à New York, ainsi que le Stedelijk Museum à Amsterdam. Son travail fait également partie des collections publiques et privées à travers le monde, et il a exposé à la Leeahn Gallery en Corée du Sud, à la Kaj Forsblom Gallery en Finlande, ainsi qu’à la Dorian Grey Gallery et à la Hal Bromm Gallery à New York.
Prol continue d’explorer des thèmes liés à la violence, à l’innocence, et à la condition humaine dans un monde dystopique. Avec une approche introspective et personnelle, il puise souvent dans ses propres souvenirs d’enfance et son passé artistique pour nourrir son travail. En 2012, une rétrospective de son œuvre a été présentée au Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art, soulignant l’importance de son apport à l’art contemporain.
« Je suis attiré par certaines choses dans le monde réel, dans mon subconscient, dans les rêves, l’histoire de l’art et les artistes contemporains. J’incorpore des objets du monde réel : seaux, portes, fenêtres cassées, saleté et toutes sortes de matériaux trouvés. Je le réduis à une essence qui se rapproche de mes sentiments. Ma vision est dystopique et absurde. Mes attaques et mes défenses sont abstraites en ce sens qu’il n’y a ni gentils ni méchants, seulement des victimes, des bourreaux et des innocents. Je ne fais pas une déclaration politique explicite, car cela affaiblirait leur puissance. Je peins dans un état de calme total, dicté par mon processus. Je ne ressens rien pendant que je travaille. Seuls les éléments formels de l’œuvre me captivent, et je suis présent et alerte pour pouvoir capturer ce qui est déjà en moi, sans essayer de le peindre. Il n’y a pas de catharsis. Je reprends toujours là où je me suis arrêté. Je peux voyager dans le temps et puiser dans mon propre travail ce dont j’ai besoin aujourd’hui. Mon propre passé est une source d’images sur laquelle je puise occasionnellement. J’essaie de renouveler ce qui était là depuis le début, depuis très longtemps, jusqu’à mon enfance. Dans mon enfance, certaines choses résonnaient très puissamment, et elles s’expriment maintenant dans mon art. Je ne savais pas pourquoi, comme une certaine couleur verte que j’ai vue un jour à Chinatown la nuit, qui m’a tellement frappé que je ne l’ai jamais oubliée. J’utilise ce vert maintenant. »
