GHOST GALERIE

DAZE

Chris Daze Ellis, American
Born in 1961
Chris “Daze” Ellis, born in 1962, is a Brooklyn kid from the Brooklyn of the ’70s, where the walls told stories more real than life itself. He was thirteen when he first laid eyes on a subway car fully covered in a massive mural. It was like a revelation, a truth that gripped the boy and never let go. In April 1981, the young man, armed with his spray can and audacity, entered the gallery scene. The Mudd Club, that vibrant, almost mythical venue in New York’s art world, opened its doors to him. There, he encountered electrifying minds—Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Zephyr, Lee Quinones—names that already resonated with a promise of eternity. Graffiti was leaving the tunnels and rooftops, stepping into the realm of art, an art that made gallery walls smile. It was more than a turning point; it was a declaration. Daze was no longer just a street artist; he was becoming one of those artists people looked at, discussed, anticipated. The following year, in 1982, he reached a milestone: his first solo show at Fashion Moda gallery in the vibrant Bronx, a sanctuary for emerging talent. This was no longer just graffiti—it was the true emergence of an artist. Daze, without ever losing sight of the streets, became a figure in the world of contemporary art, uncompromising and unapologetic. He is an artist with multiple skills. While he still wields the spray can with the finesse of a jeweler, he also ventures into drawing and collage. His shapes and colors dance, sometimes abstract, sometimes figurative, but always with that raw energy, that pulse that seems to spring from the city itself. New York saw his birth, but the whole world embraced him. Museums, galleries, and capitals around the globe display his work, which still vibrates with that rebellious energy, never straying from what shaped him. Chris Daze Ellis is the story of recognition—the recognition of an art born from the streets, stepping into the light of institutions without losing its soul, without ever betraying its origins.
“Seeing that really inspired me. When I saw that train, I knew it wasn’t done on a whim. It was planned.” Chris DAZE Ellis “Graffiti was a language the critics wanted to learn on a superficial level; they didn’t want to speak it fluently.” Chris DAZE Ellis
