Chris Daze Ellis – Américain
Né en 1961
Chris « Daze » Ellis, né en 1962, est une garçon de Brooklyn, de ce Brooklyn des années 70 où les murs racontaient des histoires plus vraies que nature. Il avait treize ans lorsqu’il posa les yeux pour la première fois sur une voiture de métro recouverte tout entière d’une fresque immense. C’était comme une révélation, une évidence qui saisit le garçon et ne le lâcha plus. C’est en avril 1981 que le jeune homme, armé de sa bombe aérosol et de son audace, entre dans l’arène des galeries. Le Mudd Club, ce lieu vibrant, presque mythique de la scène artistique new-yorkaise, lui ouvre ses portes. Là, il croise des esprits en effervescence — Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Zephyr, Lee Quinones — des noms qui, déjà, résonnent comme des promesses d’éternité. Le graffiti sort des tunnels et des toits pour s’ériger en art, un art qui fait sourire les murs des galeries. C’était plus qu’un tournant, c’était une déclaration. Daze n’était plus seulement un artiste des rues, il devenait l’un de ces artistes que l’on regarde, que l’on commente, que l’on attend. L’année suivante, en 1982, c’est la consécration : son premier solo show à la galerie Fashion Moda, dans ce Bronx bouillonnant, sanctuaire des talents montants. Il ne s’agissait plus seulement de graffiti, mais d’une véritable mise au monde d’un artiste. Daze, sans quitter la rue des yeux, devenait une figure du monde de l’art contemporain, sans compromis, sans renoncement. Il est cet artiste aux mains multiples. S’il caresse toujours la bombe aérosol avec la dextérité d’un orfèvre, il s’aventure ailleurs, vers le dessin, vers le collage. Chez lui, les formes et les couleurs dansent, tantôt abstraites, tantôt figuratives, mais toujours avec cette vigueur, ce souffle brut qui semble jaillir de la ville elle-même. New York l’a vu naître, mais le monde entier l’a accueilli. Des musées, des galeries, des capitales où son art fait vibrer, sans jamais perdre de cette énergie rebelle, sans jamais s’éloigner de ce qui l’a forgé. Chris Daze Ellis, c’est l’histoire d’une reconnaissance — celle d’un art venu de la rue, entré dans la lumière des institutions sans y perdre son âme, sans jamais trahir ses origines.
