Kenny Scharf, né à Los Angeles le 23 novembre 1958, porte dans son œuvre le souffle de la Californie et le dynamisme de New York. D’abord baigné dans la culture pop et les séries télévisées de science-fiction des années 60 et 70, il s’immerge dans l’univers de la contre-culture, influencé par des icônes comme les Jetsons et les Flintstones, qu’il réinvente dans des compositions aux couleurs éclatantes, où chaque forme vibre d’une énergie presque cosmique. En 1978, il part étudier à la School of Visual Arts de New York, s’ouvrant ainsi aux influences urbaines qui marqueront profondément son œuvre. Son arrivée à New York, dans l’effervescence créative du Lower East Side, le place immédiatement aux côtés de jeunes artistes qui, comme lui, réinventent l’art avec un sens aigu de la subversion joyeuse. Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, ou encore Rammellzee deviennent ses compagnons de route dans cette aventure artistique où la rue et la galerie s’entremêlent. Ensemble, ils capturent le chaos et la vitalité de la ville. En 1981, Scharf prend part au Times Square Show, une exposition collective qui devient instantanément mythique, consacrant un mouvement d’artistes urbains. Là, son travail se fait remarquer pour son éclat, sa singularité, et son humour mordant. Scharf défie les frontières de l’art en intégrant sa vision à des objets du quotidien : réfrigérateurs, télévisions, voitures… Tout devient toile pour son imaginaire foisonnant. Cosmic Caverns, ses installations immersives créées dans les années 80, plongent les visiteurs dans un univers fluo et psychédélique, où l’art se transforme en expérience sensorielle totale. Ces cavernes d’un autre monde offrent un refuge coloré et onirique, un espace qui suspend les règles du réel et célèbre l’absurde. Ce dialogue entre la pop culture et la critique sociale est omniprésent dans son œuvre, mêlant une naïveté apparente à une réflexion subtile sur la société de consommation. Ses œuvres, peuplées de créatures grotesques et jubilatoires, questionnent avec légèreté l’impact écologique et les excès de notre époque. Scharf crée ainsi un langage visuel qui capte l’essence d’une génération : une célébration haute en couleur et pleine d’ironie d’un monde en perpétuel changement. Aujourd’hui encore, Kenny Scharf reste fidèle à son esprit libre, continuant de surprendre par des explorations nouvelles et des collaborations originales. Toujours actif, il s’acharne à garder son art accessible et vivant, en lien avec la rue, rendant hommage à son passé tout en continuant à rêver de nouveaux mondes.
« Une partie de ce que je fais et ce que je veux faire, c’est amener l’art dans la vie quotidienne. Si vous pouvez rendre l’ordinaire—comme marcher dans la rue—et être confronté à quelque chose qui pourrait transformer votre journée, cela pourrait vous inspirer. » – Kenny Scharf La première fois que Kenny Scharf a visité New York, en 1977, il se trouvait au Food, le célèbre restaurant géré par des artistes dans le quartier de SoHo. À l’extérieur, une agitation a attiré son attention : Faye Dunaway courait dans la rue, vêtue d’une jupe fendue, en plein tournage d’une scène pour le thriller de mode Eyes of Laura Mars. « C’était bien plus Hollywoodien que tout ce dont je me souvenais en grandissant », se rappelle Scharf, qui a grandi à Los Angeles et fréquenté le lycée de Beverly Hills aux côtés des enfants de nombreuses célébrités. Moins d’un an plus tard, il retourne à Manhattan pour étudier à la School of Visual Arts, attiré par le charme d’Andy Warhol et la combinaison vibrante d’art, de musique et de vie nocturne. « Moi et tous les autres jeunes qui ont déménagé à New York à cette époque, nous voulions en faire partie », dit-il.
