Né en 1955
Leonard Hilton McGurr, que le monde connaît sous le nom de Futura 2000, est un de ces esprits singuliers qui semblent avoir su, dès leur jeune âge, tracer un chemin unique dans les méandres du graffiti new-yorkais. Né dans le tumulte des années 70, il s’empare des wagons du métro comme on s’empare d’un rêve trop vaste pour être contenu par les murs de la ville. Adolescent, déjà, sa bombe à la main, il regarde l’horizon, mais ce qu’il voit va bien au-delà des rues. Il voit l’espace, l’abstraction, l’infini.
« Quand j’ai commencé à peindre, entre 1979 et 1981, on me comparait à Kandinsky », raconte-t-il presque avec surprise, lui qui ne connaissait pas encore ce nom, ni ceux des autres artistes auxquels on le rattachait. Il peignait sans y penser, suivant une impulsion, mais cette comparaison à Kandinsky, à l’expressionnisme abstrait, le place soudain sur une autre scène, celle de l’histoire de l’art. Il est pourtant le premier à avoir osé mêler les codes du graffiti avec cette abstraction que l’on qualifiera de lyrique. La bombe devient chez lui un outil de virtuosité, chaque geste une danse de l’esprit.
Dès ses premiers trains en 1972, il fait se croiser des trajectoires improbables – celles de figures comme Basquiat, Keith Haring, et même les Clash, Madonna, Agnès b., ou encore Karl Lagerfeld. Son nom, Futura 2000, n’est pas un hasard. Tandis que d’autres se nomment d’après une rue ou un quartier, lui choisit l’avenir, les étoiles, se nourrissant de science-fiction et des promesses que l’espace semble offrir à ceux qui osent. 2001, l’Odyssée de l’espace plane sur ses créations comme une lueur d’infini, un appel à aller au-delà des murs, des lettres, au-delà même de l’art qui le façonna.
Et pourtant, dans ce monde de graffiti, Futura ne s’est jamais complu dans l’ego. « Toute l’histoire du graffiti est très narcissique », dit-il avec une pointe de lassitude. « C’est toujours cette affirmation : regardez-moi, je suis là. » Mais lui, ce jeu de l’ego l’a vite ennuyé. Il avait tant à dire, tant à offrir. Alors, peu à peu, il a laissé derrière lui les lettres, ces formes que d’autres continuaient d’exploiter. Il les a abandonnées pour l’abstraction, il a supprimé le nom même, s’éloignant doucement de ce monde qui l’avait pourtant façonné.
Ce geste, ce recul, cette quête de l’essence – tout cela le place ailleurs, dans une autre dimension, à la frontière entre graffiti et art contemporain, entre la rue et l’étoile. Futura, ce nom qui semble porter en lui toute l’utopie des années 80, est aussi une promesse : celle de ne jamais s’arrêter à ce qui est, mais de toujours regarder plus loin, plus haut.
