Lin Felton – Américain
Né en 1958
Lin QUIK Felton naît en 1958 dans cette New York des lignes métalliques et des grilles vibrantes. Il y pousse comme une herbe folle, aux côtés de Basquiat, de Keith Haring, de Seen et de Futura. Mais lui, Quik, n’a que quatre lettres à imposer sur les flancs argentés des wagons, dans cette métropole où la nuit se drape d’éclats de couleurs. Dans les années 80, il arpente inlassablement les rames, animé d’une ardeur presque poétique, recouvrant les trains de teintes audacieuses, comme si chaque couleur offrait un morceau d’infini.
Après trois années de formation et de contemplation à la Parsons School of Design, il est repéré par le Hollandais Yaki Kornblit, un galeriste qui l’invite à traverser l’Atlantique pour poser ses pinceaux en Europe. C’est là, dans le dédale des rues anciennes et des espaces ouverts des galeries, que Quik découvre une liberté nouvelle, lui permettant de forger une identité artistique unique, faite de fougue et de subtilité.
Quik est l’un de ceux qui ont apporté sur les murs des galeries d’Europe l’énergie brute du graffiti new-yorkais. Son style est une sorte de rire nerveux, insolent, un sourire en coin contre les conventions. Satire et autobiographie s’y mêlent ; il y glisse des esquisses de révolte, des clins d’œil d’un homme qui regarde le monde avec ironie. Mais surtout, dans ces peintures, se cachent des douleurs et des désirs. A la fois vif et figuratif, ses oeuvres montrent une virtuosité du trait et un sens du détail. Il y raconte une vision du monde, de son monde.
« Le graffiti était partout, comme une rumeur visuelle qui se propageait sur chaque mur de New York. Les signes des gangs noirs et latinos tapissaient la ville, et bientôt, les premières signatures en bombes de peinture commencèrent à apparaître sur les rames de métro, s’infiltrant dans l’espace public avec une audace juvénile, un goût de défi. C’était plus qu’une simple marque, c’était une effervescence de rébellion, une jeunesse qui s’affirmait, et moi, j’étais happé, perdu dans cette dynamique d’une énergie brute, éclatante.
Mais j’étais un graffeur exécrable ! J’aimais poser mon nom partout, un besoin incontrôlable d’exister, même si mes pièces étaient souvent grotesques, d’une démesure qui frôlait la caricature. Pourtant, lorsque je me joignais aux autres, je mettais un point d’honneur à travailler un style plus séduisant : des cimetières fantomatiques, des baleines égarées, des caricatures grinçantes de stéréotypes. J’avais ce goût amer pour un humour noir que je voulais imprimer dans chaque recoin de l’underground.
