PARADIGM AND DISRUPTION : THE CREATIVE PULSE OF THE 80’S

Ghost galerie, true to its positioning, presents a new chapter in its exploration of revolutionary artistic dynamics with “Paradigm and Disruption: The Creative Pulse of the 80’s.” Through this group show, the exhibition highlights the diversity of practices and voices that redefined contemporary art at the heart of 1980s New York. In a contrasting New York, where cold concrete meets explosions of color and ideas, young artists draw the avant-garde lines of an artistic renewal. Their insatiable fervor, palpable in every piece, defies conventions and reflects a world in flux. This exhibition is not merely a journey into the past but an immersion into the raw and disruptive energy of a visionary youth, driven by the pursuit of unrestrained art. This “collective of artists,” from varied disciplines – painting, sculpture, installation, and performance – transcends aesthetic and cultural boundaries to offer a polyphonic vision of this vibrant period.
From the influence of graffiti and street culture to the rise of artistic activism in response to sociopolitical crises and the emergence of new technologies, each work reflects a spirit of rebellion and an unrelenting quest for renewal. Through this group show, Ghost galerie continues to nurture a space where memory and innovation converse, celebrating the timeless impact of these disruptive movements on contemporary practices. It’s an invitation to relive the electric energy of those years while reflecting on its resonance with today’s artistic concerns.

THEN & NOW. NEW YORK STREET STYLE V2

Art & Fashion. A Scene, a Movement, a Culture: New York in the 80s and 90s. More than just a city—a muse… Here, the “ghosts” that inhabit the original DNA of Ghost Galerie are summoned, the specters of its passion for the pioneers of American graffiti and Hip Hop culture. The earliest canvas works by the major figures of New York graffiti stand as rare, physical historical witnesses to the beginnings of an unrestrained and bold popular expression that became global and remains vibrant to this day. These post-graffiti works, created by the most active street and subway artists of the early 1980s at the invitation of the most cutting-edge New York galleries of the time (Sidney Janis, Annina Nosei, Tony Shafrazi), reveal the evolution of their practice in the intimacy of the studio. These paintings on canvas and paper, more personal in nature, offer us a glimpse into the artists’ own ghosts—those that inhabit their work. Some of these “ghosts,” both historical and contemporary works, will appear and disappear unexpectedly throughout the exhibition, creating an event within the event; highlighted by a video installation and two fashion installations.

THE NAME IS THE FAME OF THE GAME

The program at Ghost Galerie Marseille opens with a series of exhibitions that resonate with a nostalgic yet daring energy. It’s a dive into the artistic effervescence of 1980s-90s New York, where the city’s walls became the canvases of a generation brimming with creative fervor. Here, the artworks unfold like fragments of an urban memory, revealing inner worlds shaped between the innocence of childhood and the rebellious affirmation of adolescence. With The Name is the Fame of the Game, we are offered a genuine immersion into the roots of New York graffiti. The viewer is invited to step into this universe of explosive lettering, striking abstractions, and expressive figures, where every detail tells a story. These works don’t just present names—they reveal voices, heartbeats, and visions reinvented in the intimacy of the studio. The fluid, free-flowing movement of the display leaves visitors in a gentle, almost feverish anticipation. What seems static is in fact alive, ready to shift,
disappear, or transform. Each encounter becomes a revelation, each piece a secret doorway into the minds of these creators who shaped a part of New York’s soul. And that is the true magic: an artistic journey tracing invisible trajectories, names that become worlds, and styles that echo one another. Ghost Galerie doesn’t merely hang artworks; it weaves a dialogue, an intimate dance between the artists, their stories, and our own perceptions.

NEW YORK STREET STYLE

Art, Music & Fashion. In the vibrant New York of the 1970s, hip-hop emerged as a cultural revolution, a language born from the streets of the Bronx and Brooklyn. DJing, at the heart of this explosion, became a street science: beats borrowed from forgotten vinyl records were reinvented into irresistible rhythms, the soundtrack of an entire generation. Over these hypnotic loops, rap erupted: a flow of sharp words, delivered like manifestos, reflecting the raw energy and urgency of a liberated youth. Beatboxing joined this explosive mix: music created directly from the body, from lips and breaths, transforming every corner of the city into an impromptu stage. On the ground, breakdancing came to life: bodies in motion telling stories, defying, protesting, in a dance that seemed to challenge the laws of gravity. And everywhere, graffiti signed this visual rebellion: vibrant frescoes of color and symbols, covering walls and subway cars like cries of existence and belonging.
This effervescence was more than just a style: it was an attitude. A way of being, speaking, and moving that transcended rules and broke barriers. New York Street Style is this unique alchemy born of concrete, where every discipline—from rap to DJing, from breaking to graffiti—became a pillar of a hybrid, universal culture. A culture that set its own codes, blending instinct and aesthetics, claiming the streets as its territory and freedom as its reason for being. This exhibition pays homage to this effervescence, capturing the spirit of a movement born on the streets, which has since become a worldwide source of inspiration.
