SEEN, whose real name is Richard Mirando, was born in the Bronx in 1961. SEEN, also known as Richard "Richie" Mirando, began tagging trains at the age of 11 in the train yard near his home in New York. "From then on, I never stopped," he says. The graffiti movement was in its infancy at the time. Richard was captivated by the painted subway trains that ran along the 6 line or parked in the Lexington Avenue depot, where his uncle's garage backed onto it. He entered the depot one Saturday afternoon in 1973 and made his first "piece". He chose the pseudonym "Seen". He went so far as to paint whole cars that marked the spirit of New Yorkers. In 1981, he took his place alongside Andy Warhol, Keith Haring and Basquiat at the New York, New Wave exhibition at PS1 in New York. In 1982, the documentary film Style Wars by Tony Silver and Henry Chalfant made him an icon of the movement in the rest of the world.
