RAMMELLZEE

Rammellzee, American
1960 – 2010
Rammellzee, born in Far Rockaway, in that state of New York where the sky seems wider, began as a teenager marking subway cars racing beneath the city. It was more than a childhood game driven by a love of freedom; he was already dreaming of something bigger. The alphabet, that great mystery governing our thoughts, obsessed him. He saw in each letter a weapon, in each line a power, and this fueled him, pushing him to go further, to search within these simple shapes for a language capable of overturning the established order—what he often called “the world equation.” His very name, Rammellzee, was an equation. Not a mere pseudonym, but a construction intended to be mathematical, almost mystical. Under this name, he painted, sculpted, shattered artistic boundaries, and reimagined the history of the alphabet, breathing new life into this ancient tale. In his 1979 manifesto, Iconic Treatise on Gothic Futurism, he declared that letters, freed from their simple literary function, became weapons. Weapons against what, if not against the oppression of a fixed language imposed by systems devoid of meaning? There was a war here, secret yet real. Those who saw him speak, who glimpsed his work, might have thought his aesthetic came straight from science fiction. Yet Rammellzee, in his futuristic armor crafted by his own hands, found echoes in the ancient writing of 16th-century monks. To him, the alphabet was an army, and one had to be armed to understand the world. It was in Tribeca, in his loft he called his “Battle Station,” where he hid away, consumed by his own philosophy. Rarely seen, when he did appear, he was always protected, like a modern warrior ready to confront a society he considered hostile. For him, graffiti went beyond streets and walls. It was a weapon of the mind, an art that challenged, that forced people to think. In Rammellzee’s view, there was nothing simple about this street language. It was an art that jolted the intellect from its lethargy, defying codes and conventions. More than a revolt, it was a conquest of the mind, waged with letters and forms that, in his hands, became tools for understanding and even overturning the world.
“‘Ikonoklast’ means symbol destroyer. It’s a very high military word because the two K’s are the only two letters that can assassinate the infinity sign, remove the X. The C’s can’t do it because that’s a cipher; it’s broken, incomplete. Why did they take out the K’s and put in two C’s? The word is incomplete now; it won’t work. We don’t bother any unarmored symbol, let them go about their business. The letter is just against one symbol that has been tricknowledged, that is the fusion symbol in the infinity sign. And that is the only symbol it is after.” — Rammellzee, ARTFORUM, Ed. deAk
