GHOST GALERIE

QUIK

Lin Felton, Americain
Born in 1958
Lin QUIK Felton was born in 1958 in a New York of metal lines and vibrant grids. He grew like a wild weed, alongside Basquiat, Keith Haring, Seen, and Futura. But Quik—his name just four letters—made his mark on the gleaming flanks of subway cars, in a metropolis where night was draped in flashes of color. In the 1980s, he tirelessly roamed the subway lines, fueled by an almost poetic fervor, covering the trains in bold hues, as if each color held a fragment of infinity. After three years of study and contemplation at Parsons School of Design, he was noticed by Dutch gallerist Yaki Kornblit, who invited him to cross the Atlantic and set up his brushes in Europe. It was there, amid the maze of old streets and open gallery spaces, that Quik discovered a newfound freedom, allowing him to shape a unique artistic identity, full of intensity and subtlety. Quik is among those who brought the raw energy of New York graffiti to the gallery walls of Europe. His style is like a nervous, defiant laugh, a sly grin aimed at conventions. Satire and autobiography merge in his work; he weaves in sketches of rebellion, hints of a man who views the world with irony. But above all, his paintings reveal hidden pains and desires. Both vibrant and figurative, his works showcase a virtuosity of line and an eye for detail, telling a vision of the world—his world.
“Graffiti was everywhere, like a visual rumor spreading across every wall of New York. The symbols of Black and Latino gangs blanketed the city, and soon, the first spray-painted tags began to appear on subway cars, infiltrating public spaces with youthful audacity, a taste for defiance. It was more than just a mark—it was an effervescence of rebellion, a youth declaring itself, and I was drawn in, swept away by this raw, radiant energy. But I was a terrible graffiti artist! I loved putting my name everywhere, an uncontrollable need to exist, even if my pieces were often grotesque, an exaggerated style bordering on caricature. Yet, when I joined others, I made a point of refining a more captivating style: ghostly cemeteries, stray whales, sharp caricatures of stereotypes. I had this bitter taste for dark humor that I wanted to imprint on every corner of the underground. And so, between 1974 and 1975, my first artistic gesture emerged on canvas, like a confession, the sketch of another self, who somehow knew that, beyond the walls, there was an art to be revealed.” Lin QUIK Felton
