LEE QUINONES

Lee George Quinones, American
Born in 1960
Born in Puerto Rico in 1960 and raised in the creative energy of New York’s Lower East Side, Lee Quinones is far more than just a graffiti artist. An undisputed master of the spray can, he is considered one of the most influential artists to emerge from the New York graffiti movement of the ’70s, with an undeniable impact on contemporary art. The spray can became his tool of choice, an extension of his hand, to express his vision of the urban world. His works, which adorned the city’s subways, were much more than simple tags. Quinones elevated graffiti to the level of art, using the trains as his canvases to convey his view of the urban landscape. With virtuosic skill, he transformed the city’s walls into powerful performance scenes. His complex compositions, often inspired by comics and popular art, quickly caught attention. With exceptional command of the spray can, he created works of remarkable complexity and unique visual energy. Beyond the subway, Quinones transcended the boundaries of graffiti, establishing himself as a major figure in contemporary art. His works, exhibited in galleries worldwide, address universal themes like society, politics, and identity. He is known for his distinct style, characterized by fluid lines, vivid colors, and a keen sense of composition. His role in Charlie Ahearn’s cult film Wild Style helped popularize graffiti and link it with the nascent hip-hop culture. Alongside Lady Pink, he embodied on screen the rebellious and creative spirit of an entire generation.
« The Art Was My Escape » Lee Quinones « Lee Quinones was probably the most talented of the New York graffiti artists, and he began exhibiting abroad as early as 1979 » Lin Felton
