GHOST GALERIE

FUTURA 2000

Leonard Hilton McGurr, American
Born in 1955
Leonard Hilton McGurr, known worldwide as Futura 2000, is one of those rare minds who seemed to know from a young age how to carve a unique path through the intricate world of New York graffiti. Born in the turbulence of the 1970s, he took over subway cars as one would capture a dream too vast to be contained within the city’s walls. As a teenager, with a spray can in hand, he looked to the horizon, yet what he saw went far beyond the streets. He saw space, abstraction, infinity. “When I started painting, between 1979 and 1981, people compared me to Kandinsky,” he says, almost in surprise, as he didn’t yet know that name, nor those of other artists to whom he was being linked. He painted without overthinking, driven by an impulse, but this comparison to Kandinsky and to abstract expressionism suddenly placed him on another stage—the stage of art history. Yet, he was the first to dare to mix the codes of graffiti with a style that would be called lyrical abstraction. For him, the spray can became a tool of virtuosity, each gesture a dance of the mind. From his earliest trains in 1972, he created improbable intersections—with figures like Basquiat, Keith Haring, and even the Clash, Madonna, Agnès b., and Karl Lagerfeld. His name, Futura 2000, is no accident. While others named themselves after a street or neighborhood, he chose the future, the stars, drawing inspiration from science fiction and the promises that space seemed to offer to those who dared. 2001: A Space Odyssey hovers over his creations like a glimmer of infinity, a call to go beyond walls, beyond letters, beyond even the art that shaped him. Yet, in this graffiti world, Futura never indulged in ego. “The whole history of graffiti is very narcissistic,” he says with a hint of weariness. “It’s always this assertion: look at me, I’m here.” But for him, this ego game quickly became dull. He had so much more to say, so much more to offer. Gradually, he left behind letters, those forms others continued to explore. He abandoned them for abstraction, even shedding his own name as he drifted away from the world that had, after all, shaped him. This gesture, this retreat, this quest for essence—this places him elsewhere, in another dimension, at the frontier between graffiti and contemporary art, between the street and the stars. Futura, a name that seems to carry with it all the utopian spirit of the 1980s, is also a promise: to never stop at what is, but to always look further, higher.
“When I started painting, between 1979 and 1981, people compared me to Kandinsky,” he recalls almost with surprise, he who didn’t yet know that name, nor those of other artists he was linked to. He painted without thinking, following an impulse, but this comparison to Kandinsky and to abstract expressionism suddenly placed him on another stage—the stage of art history. Yet, he was the first to dare to mix the codes of graffiti with a lyrical abstraction. For him, the spray can became a tool of virtuosity, each gesture a dance of the mind” Futura
