Born in 1961
Born in 1961, John Matos, better known as CRASH, hails from the Bronx. As a pioneer and leading figure of the movement, his daring artistic journey has been essential in redefining the boundaries of New York graffiti and Post-Graffiti. In 1975, John introduced the name CRASH into the streets of New York by marking subway cars and the cityscape with his colorful creations. These moving surfaces became ephemeral canvases that he claimed with the spirit of a rebellious teenager, one who firmly believed that graffiti was not vandalism. Alongside his friends, he explored Wild Style, an artistic deformation of lettering that became the bold signature of New York graffiti in the 1970s and 1980s. Then in 1979, he joined Graffiti Studio, which allowed artists like Dondi, Futura, and Daze to transition to studio production. This marked the start of a new chapter in his career, as he enthusiastically embraced the Post-Graffiti movement, a movement that would in many ways redefine perceptions of contemporary art. In October 1980, at the age of 19, he organized an exhibition titled Graffiti Art Success for America at Fashion MODA in the South Bronx. This groundbreaking show played a critical role in legitimizing the movement. As a pioneer, CRASH vastly expanded the scope of possibilities, bridging the worlds of street artists and the Manhattan art scene. This connection enabled him to exhibit in 1983 at the prestigious Sidney Janis Gallery (known for showcasing Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko…), a pivotal event that opened the doors to many prestigious galleries, museums, and private collections, where the name CRASH has since echoed as a cry for freedom. ECHOES OF THE PAST, a retrospective exhibition, draws from the catalog : “In the Defiant Brilliance of Contemporary Art, where CRASH’s creativity resonates like a rebellious melody. Each gesture becomes a note, each piece a living symphony. Like a composer, he transformed—starting in the 1970s—the streets of New York into a visual score, where concrete and steel served as the stage for a stylistic rebellion powered by a new instrument: the spray can. The roots of his journey are anchored in the exuberant energy of the 1970s, amid the unrestrained chaos of an underground New York bubbling with vitality and creative genius. From this tumultuous world emerged an urban poetry—a graphic, rebellious symphony defying the ordinary—carried by bold spirits and avant-garde expressions. They transformed this period into a melting pot of innovative ideas and uprisings, where audacity and defiance combined to shape a revolutionary cultural landscape. Then came the end of that era and the beginning of the 1980s: the transition from street to studio. This shift was driven by a desire to explore new dimensions far removed from the constraints of the urban ephemerality. He perfected his technique, refined his style, and deepened his introspection. This artistic journey through the decade unfolds like a heady symphony, an open score overflowing with energy. Like a visual crescendo, galleries became for CRASH the illuminated showcases of a new world, enigmatic yet captivating. His unique style, a harmonious fusion of lettering and comics, transformed into a dancing melody attuned to his imagination and inspirations, like a blend of artistic expressions constantly evolving. His early canvases emerged as masterpieces, audaciously transcending the codes of contemporary art. His works present themselves not only as aesthetic creations but as fearless testaments to a resolutely provocative artistic expression. From the urban maze to gallery walls, CRASH’s artistic journey gradually took shape—where the fleeting and creativity intertwined. In the revealing intimacy of his studio, a celebration unfolds. A metamorphosis occurs. In this secret lab, blank canvases become fields of experimentation. Bold explosions of color, expertly traced letters, and nods to pop culture outline a visual language that captures the timeless essence of creativity. Inviting immersion into the imagination, his works urge viewers to grasp the elusive, to feel the spontaneity of the gesture. In this sense, the studio is not merely a physical space but a portal into CRASH’s mental universe. Each stroke, each composition, contributes to a visual adventure where the artist, painting and drawing the ephemeral within the immutable, crystallizes the effervescent essence of graffiti. His creations reveal reflections of emotions and meanings, transcending the transient to bear witness to the audacity of Post-Graffiti, offering a visual meditation on the ephemerality of existence and the permanence of art. From the frenzied energy of his beginnings to the more nuanced explorations of maturity, he became a pioneer of a Post-Graffiti artistic contemporaneity. He explored broader dimensions, questioning established aesthetic norms and demonstrating that beauty, in this context, can take varied and sometimes unconventional forms. Over his 40 years of creation, CRASH’s artistic legacy endures, evolving, weaving a singular visual chronicle in the timeless tapestry of art. An imprint etched into the artistic continuum of time.
