Born in 1959

Hervé Di Rosa is one of the founders of the Figuration Libre with Richard Di Rosa, François Boisrond, Rémi Blanchard and Robert Combas, a painting revival in the 1980s, a painting often borrowing from comics, rock and graffiti. Since 1993, Hervé di Rosa has been exploring traditional skills during his 19 trips around the world, which have taken him to several continents. After forty years of a practice characterized by an unusual energy, Hervé Di Rosa's creative approach is unique and marked by an insatiable curiosity. The artist has long invited us to shift our gaze, opening up the field of art history to other horizons. This openness does not only consist in creating new forms but in constantly reviewing past and present creations in a constant freedom. Without claiming a particular style, but by developing a narrative universe of his own, populated by recurring characters, he has practiced all the techniques of creation: painting, sculpture, comic strip, tapestry, print, fresco, lacquer, embossed silver, ceramics, cartoon, digital images, among others. He is also the author or subject of over 150 art books and publications between 1978 and 2019. Conceiver of Modest Art, he founded in 2000, in Sète, the International Museum of Modest Arts (MIAM), where he exhibits many artists from around the world and creates exhibitions that question the boundaries of contemporary art. Since 1981, his work has been the subject of more than 200 solo exhibitions and is present in important public and private collections in Europe, America and Asia. His work has been exhibited in France and internationally, in group and solo exhibitions, including Viva Di Rosa at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris in 1988; Autour du monde. Hervé Di Rosa at the Maison de la Culture in Amiens in 1998; Plus jamais seul. Hervé Di Rosa et les arts modestes at the Maison Rouge in Paris in 2013; Modestes Tropiques at the Musée du quai Branly in Paris in 2014; Hervé Di Rosa - L'oeuvre au Monde at La Piscine in Roubaix in 2018. He participated in the 13th Paris Biennial in 1985 and in the 5th Lyon Biennial of Contemporary Art in 2000.
